There are many variants Of Rover V8 Timing chain sets, here I am attempting to show all types used by ourselves and the variations that are suitable for your own engine and engine needs.
This timing chain set is unique to the ‘Thor’ Motronic 4.0 and 4.6 V8 mostly found post 1999 Range Rover but also on earlier Discoveries. It looks the same as the the gems type but it is different enough to cause serious engine running problems if you fit the wrong one. (Gems type is shown below). Please note also Dual timing chain sets are not available for this type.
Here you can see a Sagem ‘Gems’ type timing chain set. It looks near the same as the Thor Motronic one at first glance, however the cut outs that the Camshaft timing sensor notes are not the same nor are they in the same position Dual timing chain sets are not available for this type.
This is the standard rover V8 timing chain set as used from 1967 to 1993, the fibre outer wheel is prone to wear and the system comes with no thrills but is very robust especially when you take a look at how worn and stretched the one you have is once you examine it. Fit a new one always or consider a better upgrade to one of the higher specifications duplex kits from J&P or full vernier from Piper that we offer.
Here you can see the top of the range full venire timing gear kit from Piper it is the best there is for the job, but for all but the most discerning engines is not required, We offer it though because a small percentage of the engine we build or assist in building will truly benefit from such products. Remember though this item is not suitable for Gems or Thor Motronic V8 Rover engines
This is our most popular timing kit from J&P, it comes with many timing adjustment possibilities, none though needed, the true worth of this cam kit is its robust design, the duplex timing chain and 20 years and thousands of J&P timing kits we have used with our many own engines as well as those we have supplied worldwide
